Read how our Employment and Training service helped 29-year-old resident Nadira get her confidence back and secure a permanent job.
“I was unemployed for seven years. My confidence was low and I thought I’d never be able to get a job” said 29-year-old Nadira.
In October, Nadira met our Employment & Training team at a community event on the Isle of Dogs. She was out of work for some time after having a child and was concerned about returning.
The team put Nadira at ease and explained the benefits of work to her and her family. At the event Nadira signed up to the service and attended a one-to-one session with an employment coach the next day.
Nadira had told the team she was interested in retail work as she had experience in the sector. The following day, Nadira visited our training centre and attended a group session that focused on interview techniques in customer services.
Nadira’s confidence grew and as she continued to receive support, including motivational coaching sessions and help with interview preparation which was particularly useful as she had applied for a sales assistant role at Marks and Spencer.
Nadira said: “The interview went really well. I felt confident and remembered the advice I’d been given.” With the team’s help, Nadira was offered a temporarily part-time job as a sales assistant which she could fit around her childcare and didn’t affect her entitlement to benefits.
She is still working and, since then, her husband has also registered with the service for career guidance to help him towards a better paid position.
Nadira says: “I can’t believe how quickly my life has changed. I was unemployed for seven years. My confidence was low and I thought I’d never find a job. I’m working for a good employer and feel so happy. I’m looking forward to the future. This would not have happened without One Housing’s support.” Nadira has now been offered a permanent contract, working hours that still fit around her childcare needs.
