    Tackling homelessness
    Helping homeless people to move on to secure homes and more stable futures is at the heart of what we do. Regardless of their history, one thing all of our customers get when they come to us is another chance to rebuild their lives. We give them a safe place to stay along with personalised support and real opportunities to learn new skills, find a job and get their independence back.

    A key area of One Housing's work is supporting people who are homeless, living in temporary accommodation or who are at risk of becoming homeless. Our innovative approach helps to reduce stigma, develop aspirations and offer real opportunities for customers to develop employment skills. We work hand-in-hand with social enterprises and commercial businesses to create a mixed, vibrant environment, all under one roof, where our homeless customers can be motivated to get on the right track.

    Arlington is our flagship service in the heart of Camden. It is inspired by the Times Square scheme pioneered by homeless charity Common Ground in New York. We have converted what used to be basic lodgings for those in need, when it first opened in 1905, into a modern facility which prepares our homeless customers to achieve independence and re-integrate within the community.

    Clarence House in Bedford is our second homeless hostel to open, taking its first residents in 2018. This purpose-built hostel has 29 self-contained studio apartments with a team of support staff available 24/7, including specialist support officers to assist residents with a range of complex needs.

    Alongside our work at Arlington and Clarence House, we support customers living in temporary accommodation, supported housing or floating support services. Our focus is on helping customers to settle into their new home, developing skills to manage their tenancy, and accessing permanent accommodation. Our Hackney Support service provides floating support to customers throughout their stay in temporary accommodation as well as a three month settling in period once they have moved to permanent accommodation.

    Our homeless hostels work in partnership with local authorities to reduce rough sleeping. This is achieved through a range of support, including:

    • helping people to reconnect with communities
    • reducing substance misuse
    • tackling anti-social behaviour
    • reducing street activity and offending behaviour
    • developing life skills
    • promoting health and wellbeing
    • accessing social inclusion and learning opportunities
    • building relationships
    • employment
    • helping people move on
    • debt management.
